6 Must-Visit Attractions in Batan Island, Batanes

Make the most out of your visit to a Batanes accommodation by seeing the attractions in the province's most populous island, Batan. In the capital municipality of Basco alone, you and your company are sure to have a grand time taking pictures of the natural and man-made structures which have withstood the test of time and harsh weather. So make sure your cameras are fully charged because Batan has plenty of destinations that will keep any traveler occupied for days.

Here are but a few of the attractions that should definitely make it to your itinerary.
  • Fundacion Abad or Pacita Abad Museum — Begin your tour by heading to a familiar space: a museum. What was once the home of internationally acclaimed artist Pacita Abad has been transformed into a museum where the public can view her paintings. It is also an option for travelers who are still wondering where to stay in Batanes. For bookings and inquiries, Fundacion Pacita's contact number is +63-939-9016353.
  • Mt. Iraya — See the most active volcano on the north-east side of the Philippines by journeying just a few kilometers outside Basco town proper. Mt. Iraya rises at 1,008 meters and its previous eruption is said to be the source of the island's rich soil.
  • Radar Tukon — The remnant of this PAGASA's weather monitoring station in Basco is now a perfect spot to take in a 360-degree view of the island.
  • Kanyuyan Beach Port — More commonly known as the Port of Basco, Kanyuyan Beach Port receives goods and produce that come from Luzon, Manila, and other parts of the country.
  • Sto. Domingo Church — This Basco landmark was one of the first limestone buildings to be constructed in the province during the Spanish regime. It was built in 1812, and the convent beside the structure was added 2 years later. The construction was initiated by Dominican friars and employed masons, stone cutters, and carpenters from Cagayan.
  • Valugan Bay — A popular spot for those who wish to meditate and simply feel the island's tranquility, Valugan Bay is set 3 kilometers from the town proper. The bay's colorful outline comes from a blend fine white sand and smooth, multicolored rocks which are said to come from Mt. Iraya. The beach itself easily covers a kilometer of the shore.
A day of touring can be quite tiring, but you can always look forward to energizing seafood dishes when you come back to your Batanes resort.
